Dear Tremere:

It doesn't cost much to make a gesture of condolence, and it'll mean a lot to the friends he left behind. Lilies would be appropriate, and a few amaranth flowers will show how much you really care (though you may have to look for these - Interflora no longer carry them.)

Sending Christmas cards is always a thorny problem. If you don't send a card, and Porthos' shade does, it'll be awkward for you; if you do send a card, and he doesn't, it'll be just as embarrassing for him. Perhaps the best way to resolve this problem would be to ask a mutual friend - someone tactful - to discreetly find out whether he's planning on sending you a card.

Yours, Abby (6th Generation Ventrue)
